Nurse Education on Litigation “Tripwires” & Key Documentation Issues:
Lessons Learned from Four Decades of Defending Malpractice Lawsuits
John’s premise is that the more nurses understand about malpractice lawsuits and how such cases develop, the better they can avoid or reduce litigation risk.
He offers in-person workshops and webinars to help nurses understand how routine situations can evolve into lawsuits, and documentation issues that are often pivotal in these cases. Both modules are for CE credit and are interactive with polls, contests, and case studies.
In August John teamed up with moderator Rebecca Cypher, MSN, PNNP for two webinars, “Anatomy of a Birth Injury Lawsuit.” Attendees included bedside nurses, educators, managers and executives from across the U.S., as well as nurses in Mexico and Spain. On a scale of 1 – 5, John received an average rating of 4.8 for event satisfaction. Here are some comments from participants:
- “Excellent help for what to chart in difficult situations. I found every detail informative and interesting. It could have been 8 hours and I still would have been interested.”
- “Loved hearing from an attorney perspective of his experiences.”
- “I enjoyed the overall conversation of the webinar!”
- “I found the detailed review of the most common OB nursing liability allegations to be most helpful.”
- “I think it was fantastic – a great birds eye view to understand how a case comes about and the particular weaknesses in nursing care/documentation that are most often the root cause.”
- “…I felt it was all very helpful. I like the interactive portions and the mini case scenarios….”
- “I loved that it was interactive and not strictly lecture. I enjoyed the case studies as well.”
- “The whole presentation was helpful to me as a nurse manager and a bedside nurse!” …[Suggest] recording so I can rewatch!”
- “Longer! 😊”
- “Great talk, happy to attend more!
